My Web Presence
My web presence is something I want people to look at and get an understanding about me. When someone looks at my web presence, I want them to see the positive side of me, not the bad. I want people to see that I like to have a good time and meet people just like everyone else. The things I say, the people I appeal to, and my images are three things I think people look at to judge my web presence. People use the internet and social sites to meet others. I created a web presence to do the same.
When I put status on my site, I watch what I say because I never know who could be looking at what I post. For example, my mother is one of my friends on Facebook. I wouldn’t want her to see me saying something explicit on the internet. There could also be bosses and potential employers looking at my site and see something I said. I want my web presence to represent me in a positive way. When people look at my page, they should not have anything bad to say about me. I said I created a web presence to meet new people, possible friends. If I put explicit things up, people may think I’m not friend material. There were times when I would post something controversial, but it was to have a discussion about that certain topic. Even though I would talk about a controversial topic, I would still watch the things I would say. Twitter is a social site where I would post differently than Facebook. I have just college students as my friends on Twitter, so I say things college students appeal to. My web presence appeals to other college students like me. I joined social sites like Facebook and Twitter to meet people from Valdosta State University and my home town to make new friends. When I first joined these sites, I was told not to put my picture up and information because of predators. I have my pages on privacy, so I can only add people that I want to appeal to like people around my age. Even though my pages are set to private, I don’t put personal information like my address and phone number. I have morals my family have thought me. I try not to say things that would disappoint others. On Facebook is where I watch what I say the most. I appeal to people around my age, but I have friends on Facebook that are parents of my friends and teachers. That makes me behave. Twitter is a little different. I talk about things on campus I experience on the day to day because I have nothing but college students as friends.
My images are the last thing I think would defy my web presence. I have nothing on my images that would symbolize no morals. I put images on my social sites just to show what I look like not to make a statement. Obscene images help me make bad first impressions of others and that is not what I want others to think of me. Like I said before, I have teachers and parents on Facebook. Someone could see an offensive image on my page and tell my parents and then I’m looked down upon.

In conclusion, I want my web presence to symbolize someone with good morals. I wanted to appeal to college students and people around my age when I created my web presence. I think in order to have good web presence, I have to watch what I say, make sure my images are appropriate, and have a certain audience to appeal to. In the future, I can see myself still using social sites to communicate with others. Social sites are now a part of communication, and I can see it increasing over the next years. Web presence will be important in the future also.
